VaultMaster

Pattern lock

Open your vault by drawing a pattern of six or more dots. Your pattern never leaves your iPhone.

How the pattern lock works

You draw a pattern on a grid of dots to open your vault. New patterns need at least six dots, because short patterns are easy to guess.

The pattern is never stored. It’s stretched with PBKDF2 (600,000 rounds) and mixed with a secret that sits behind your iPhone’s Secure Enclave. The result is the key that opens a small file in your vault, and that file holds the vault’s master key.

Why six dots or more

A pattern with a corner or two and an unusual shape is far harder to guess than a straight line or an initial. VaultMaster asks for six dots when you set a pattern and helps you check it isn’t too predictable.

What it can’t do

We’d rather tell you plainly than have you find out later.

  • Someone who watches you draw your pattern can copy it. Draw it where no one can see.
  • Short or predictable patterns are easier to guess, so use six or more dots in an unusual shape.
